About this Project
Rewilding Stonnington is proud to join a network of regional initiatives to regenerate and improve habitat around the Yarra River/Birrarung and its tributaries, partnering with land managers, government authorities and other community groups, in consultation with Traditional Custodians and Elders.
Funding for this project through the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments program was made possible with support from immediate past MP for Higgins and now Senator, Dr Michelle Anandah-Rajah.
We are delighted to have secured land management agreements with City of Stonnington and Melbourne Water, for access to pilot sites in South Yarra, Windsor and Toorak. These pilot sites are the first steps to establishing two proposed biodiversity corridors:
- South Yarra to Windsor and
- Kooyong to Yarra River/Birrarung, via Heyington
We are working with our community partners to promote a broader vision for each corridor.

Improving Amenity
Sites on the Kooyong-Birrarung corridor will help improve catchment and link habitat near the confluence of Gardiner’s Creek/Kooyongkoot with the Yarra River/Birrarung. Sites on the South Yarra-Windsor corridor will form the northern section of GreenLink, a proposal to enhance green space and improve public amenity along the Sandringham rail corridor from South Yarra to Elster Creek.
