Rewilding Stonnington has been exploring The Walks Projects, larger-scale feeder catchment, habitat and public amenity projects along the Sandringham and Glen Waverley rail corridors since 2021, in consultation with other local groups, land managers and Traditional Owners and Elders. With support from immediate past MP for Higgins, Dr Michelle Anandah-Rajah, funding has been secured from the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments program for what is now Regenerate! 2025-2027.
Regenerate! South Yarra to Windsor: Two pilot sites on Council land (pocket park at 46 Osborne St South Yarra and part of the Windsor Siding Reserve) initiate a proposed biodiversity and access corridor from South Yarra to Windsor. This in turn forms part of the Green Link Alliance proposal for the Sandringham railway corridor (Yarra River/Birrarung to Elster Creek).
Regenerate! Kooyong to Yarra River/Birrarung: Two pilot sites, one on Council land at WM Dane Park and the other managed by Melbourne Water near the river at Birrarung Banks, will initiate a proposed biodiversity and access corridor from Kooyong to the Yarra River/Birrarung, via Heyington. The work at Birrarung Banks extends activity already undertaken by The Yarra Link Project on their adjacent site near the Heyington Railway Bridge.
In future years we hope to extend both Walks routes in collaboration with land managers, Traditional Custodians and our community partners the GreenLink Alliance, the KooyongKoot Alliance and The Yarra Link Project.
We also acknowledge the work of organisations with similar long term goals to support and advocate for the health of our local environment and waterways, including The Yarra Riverkeeper Association, Birrarung Valley Walk and InPlace.
