We get a lot of enquiries about indigenous plants, including from people interested in planting at home. This list of suggested plants suitable for local conditions was last revised in June 2025. We work on public and public-facing land, so it’s mainly aimed at nature strips but should give home gardeners some ideas. Most plants on the list are available from indigenous plant nurseries in the Melbourne area. While plants including grasses can be propagated yourself, it’s best to work from stock you have already grown. Remember that many native plant species are protected by legislation and a permit is required for seed collection from public land.
